One of the ways that the developers at Turbine are making crafting unique is through vocations. In other words, combinations of different crafting professions. Each vocation is comprised of three gathering and production professions, each of which compliment each other or are designed to assist other vocations. While the full details of how crafting is going to operate won't be made available until the NDA is lifted, we will provide the vocation combinations and profession descriptions for you below. This should give you some idea of what to expect out of crafting at a very fundamental level.

Armsman

Prospector (Gathering)

The Prospector is a master gatherer who specializes in the accumulation of material ore. Presumably with a pick in hand, he will maneuver his way throughout Eriador in search of the richest mineral deposits that still remain in the world. Many players shall certainly prove that the Dwarves are not the only ones who are masters of mining.

Arguably the most common gathering profession, the prospector is quintessential to the success of Armsmen, Armorers, Explorers and Tinkerers. For in each of these vocations the use of material ore is essential to the craft of weapons, armor and the like. Any player that finds the need of ore would certainly be advised to gather at every possible moment.

Weaponsmith (Production)

The Weaponsmith is the penultimate crafter of shaft and steel. In the troubled days of Middle-earth, many adventurers will look towards these individuals in hopes of a fearsome weapon to gain an added edge in battle. Utilizing the hot fires of the forge, this crafter is able to create swords, spears, axes, hammers and much more.

Certainly the Weaponsmith will be the production craft in the highest demand. In any battle against the forces of the Dark Lord Sauron, a valued weapon in hand will mean the difference between victory and defeat, life or death. It is for this reason that players should seek out the Weaponsmith at every possible opportunity to ensure they always have the advantage in battle.

Woodworker (Unsupported Production)

The Woodworker is a master of wood and haft that allows him to create an array of deadly weapons for ranged and melee combatants alike. Utilizing the ever-useful work bench and knives, the Woodworker can create bows, staves and spear hafts.

The Woodworker will be a frequent proprietor for Hunters and Lore-masters, but perhaps Guardians and Champions as well. Much like the Weaponsmith, a reliable bow or stave often means the difference in battle, and as such the relevant players should acquire their services often.

Armorer

Metalsmith (Production)

The Metalsmith is an expert on all matters relating to metal, and as such is a craftsman of heavy armor and shields. Certainly any aspiring guardians, champions and captains will seek the services of the Metalsmith on a frequent basis, save if they want disaster to befall them. Utilizing the forge, the Metalsmith is able to create these works of great strength for the benefit of all the free peoples of Middle-earth.

In all likelihood, the Metalsmith will be one of the most desired crafts in Middle-earth, at least as far as melee combatants are concerned. Guardians in particular should take note of their services: for if one cannot provide a strong front line defense, then darkness will consume not only the person in question, but all allies involved.

Tailor (Unsupported Production)

The Tailor masterfully crafts all sorts of light armor, including clothing for the fashionably inclined. Though while the armor they mold is not comparable to that of the metalsmith, it should not be under-estimated: minstrels, hunters and lore-masters rely on the lighter variants for optimal protection.

The Tailorsmith certainly will be a niche, but highly warranted craft for those that seek them out. After all, it is not just the Guardians that need protection on the field of battle. Henceforth, if one takes the path of a minstrel, hunter or lore-master, it would be advisable to seek the services of the Tailor.

Explorer

Forester (Gathering)

Whilst is little information on the subject, it is likely that the Forester will involve himself primarily with the gathering of wood. Though with a clear connection to the Tailor, this could be doubted. Once more information on the subject is release, this page will be updated.

Historian

Farmer (Gathering)

While information is limited on how this gathering profession will operate, the farmer will concern himself with growing crops (and perhaps pipe-weed) on his plot of land. Once more details are available, this page will be updated.

Scholar (Production) Great [Scholar's Guide] posted by DarkkHero on the LOTRO Forums.

LOTRO Scholar Node Map

The Scholar is among the most useful crafts in all of Middle-earth, but certainly benefits fellow trades-persons the most. Through the collection of lost lore from the first and second ages of the world, the Scholar puts the lost pieces together and creates helpful recipes for his peers. The extent of the helpfulness of this craft remains to be seen, but certainly it will be a boon to players everywhere.

Jeweller (Production)

The Jeweller will focus on the creation of objects and equippable adornments for a wide variety of adventurers. It is said, as well, that the Jeweller can create true works of art.

Cook (Unsupported Production)

The Cook specializes in the production of food for travelling adventurers. What long-lasting effect food will have on players is not known, but surely it will be a welcome boon regardless.
