Tips

The first pilot squadron is always the worst. You've got this ship, you don't know what to do with it, you don't know what any of the things in it do, and you're supposed to go kill other ships with it?! Relax, kid... me and the other flyboys around here will tell ya what ya need to know. First off, it gets easier with every kill you make - flying, like everything else, is only tough at the start. Sure, you'll get some jobs from your contacts that will rip you a new one, but nothing's impossible when you're behind a stick. For example, if you run a squadron and actually manage to ace it, you decide you want to run another squadron for, say, CorSec, you'll run it through much faster because of your previous experience - sort of a double experience payout, if you get what I mean. Work for the Rebels, the Imperials, and the Freelancers, and you'll get four times the experience you had just starting out.

Woah, easy there kid! Don't go runnin' off just yet; I'm not finished talkin' to ya. So you've got a few kills under your belt by now, you've finished all the insane jobs your contacts have given you, and you've got an eye to improving your ship. No harm in that - she's your livelihood, and the only thing keepin' you from turning into a big gooey mess out there in the black. You've got some components, and each of those components has a ranking... a level of training you'll need to not have it blow up in your face - let's call it a certification level. Usually, the higher the cert on something, the better it performs. Now, if you find yourself a good shipwright, he'll clue you in that sometimes, ship components can be improved, through a process of reverse engineering. Trick is, he's gonna need to put together a whole bunch of parts, take pieces from all of them, and assemble a finished product - a reverse-engineered component. Now, the reason I'm tellin' you this, kid, is because one of these pieces is only as good as the worst part about it, so you don't want to go giving your shipwright one nice piece and a whole bunch of crap - you'll get a crappy part with one redeeming quality.

Now, if you don't have a whole lotta cash with you, you can just get something crafted for you - but be careful! Most of this crafted stuff is fine, but it's got some serious problems with it, so just be aware. You've got to know your ship, and know what she can and can't do, before you start getting yourself in over your head. Got all that, kid? Good... now get up there and make me proud!

Other Notes

Some helpful waypoints for aspiring pilots:

  • Black Sun Static Spawn (Endor System) -595, -1786, -5892

Good spawn here, 3 Tier 4 Black Sun ships every 5 - 10 minutes. Not necessarily good for grinding, but decent for loot if you have the time to devote. Black Sun Tier 4's and 5's also drop the infamous Black Sun Ace Helm, worth 30-90 million credits depending on who you sell it to. The catch is that the drops for one of these are about as rare as a PLC, so if you catch a helm, do you really wish to sell it?

  • Black Sun in Kessel (Kessel System) -2212, -596, -1866

At this waypoint there are either Corsairs or nothing, but every now and then there are also Tier 5 Black Sun fighters. I have only fought them briefly before and supposed them as part of someone's whacky mission, but Vazh'kra also fought two wings of them. Fleet Command found this intruiging enough to post here, so PLEASE TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS PLACE!

  • Dark Eclipse (Dathomir System) -207, -890, 129

This is a little place of interest for those with the Cssyk Badge quest line. You know who you are. Spin by this place sometime and try your luck; within a half hour there should be something worth experimenting with. (For those with the curiousity, but without the patience, the Dark Eclipse is a Tier 5 cruiser with 5 weapon hardpoints)

  • Evil Raider Tyrants (Endor System) 1843, -852, -2597

This is a waypoint of constant Tier 3 Kimogila bombers. This particular spot has a couple useful traits: it's not so much a spawn as a stopover for the ships, as they hyper in at one point and exit a little while later. They aggro at almost everything, so pilots should have no trouble getting to them. Another point of interest: as the ships are bombers, they have a nice, slow banking and top speed, so pilots new to gunning in a POB would have the easiest time learning the skills in this area. In addition to the above, these ships drop a lot of loot in a wide variety. Oh, and as these ships are Tier 3 bombers, they make excellent grinding for Tier 1-3 pilots.

  • TIE Swarm (Kashyyyk System) -2042, -1683, -1302

This area is where many different TIE vessels roam, including some RGI. RGI, or Royal Guard Interceptors, are the only vessels of the Imperial Fleet painted red. When an Imperial Player is comming after you in one of these, it is dangerous. However, when a Tier 2 or 3 NPC pilot is comming after you, it's a little less scary. This is another place to sit your POB at and chill with some grinding pilots for a while. Fire at the station and watch the beehive erupt.

  • Star Ravager Entrance (Kessel System) 7000, 7000, 7000

This waypoint is very valuable to pilots wanting to become an Ace of their chosen non-Imperial squadron. The Star Ravager, about 6 or 7 fighters, and two Ye-4 Gunboats hyper into this point, fiddle around for about a minute, and start their course to the opposite end of Kessel. When a Vette has left the system or has been blown up, it takes 1 to 2 hours to come back. Some people know it as 2 hours but I have sat and waited only 1 before it showed a few times. On the other hand, I have also waited more than 2, so some things are always a toss-up.

  • Star Ravager Exit (Kessel System) -6340, -225, -6160

This is a rough waypoint for the 'general' area of where the Star Ravager exits Kessel. This is good to know simply so you can judge how much time you may have on a vette run. Note that the Star Ravager and escort do not travel in a straight line from the entrance to the exit, so use the distances as a rough gauge.

  • Vette Trainer (Yavin System) -5551, -2379, -564

Dalsar stumbled upon this completely by accident. This waypoint is called 'Vette Hulk', and that is a more accurate term for what this truly is: a static floating Corellian Corvette hull, not manned or even operational, but still solid. Pilots who don't seem to make any damage on a real vette can come to this hull with an ace pilot and figure out why they aren't doing any damage to, say, the front Shield Generators or the Reactor. Perfectionist pilots can use this point to really get their game down, and if they can find a couple willing pilots to go with them, can even practice how to disable the Vette first without having to deal much with the GB's behind it!

  • Chiss Poachers (Kashyyyk System) -7014, 896, 2286

Some may dispute this point but I will say it straight with tested knowlege and testimony from Jaxston (Former Fleet Captain) and Thradd (elite imperial PvP'er, was one of the first pilots to ace after JTL went live): with a good Entertainer's General Buff (for faction and xp x10%), this is the fastest grind anywhere in the galaxy. There are more interesting things to kill to break up the monotomy and their waypoints are already listed, but if you are solo and you want to get that first 1 mil xp out of the way so you can fly your Awing and Adv. Xwing, here is where you do it. This isn't a bad place to also get loot, so POB Captains LISTEN UP: it's not such a bad deal to sit up there for an hour or so, doing your knitting, while a few newbie pilots grind in your turrets, because you will rake in a decent amount of loot. Either offer it to Virell's vendor, or use it yourself. There is even the extra incentive of the credit chips your gunners are earning you; just sit your character beside your loot container and watch that chip grow!

  • ZzethCorp Headquarters (Fort Cohav, Dantooine)

I include this waypoint because as the guild's most-established Shipwright, you should be on good terms with this fella. Not to say that he's THE GUILD's shipwright, because I know there are a few others hiding in the woodwork, but truth be told, Virell has the best shop setup for LNR members in the Parts for Pilots program (which is still going on, as long as people still turn in parts they don't want). Inside the Large Naboo House at this location is a vendor just inside the door filled with too many items to name by heart: well over 700, at least. Most of these have eye-fetching quality in one stat or another for use in RE'ing, and if not, there are plenty of placeholders if you already have the magic combination of parts but need a few more to make the RE happen.
